Best Stretch Mark Cream

Finding the best stretch mark cream for you requires thorough research and more than a little patience.  There are so many different products in the market all claiming to be the best, that the hunt for the right solution can be confusing and time consuming, but ultimately rewarding.

Stretch marks are caused by tears in the middle layer (dermis) of the skin, when it is stretched during periods of rapid weight gain, typically during puberty and pregnancy.  There are many treatments available to prevent or eradicate these lesions such as massaging the affected areas with moisturizing creams, maintaining a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water, or even cosmetic surgery.  However, by far the most popular treatments all over the world are stretch mark creams.  There are many good ones available but whether they are the best ones for you will depend on a number of factors such as the age of the scars, how well and quickly your wounds heal, and genetic predisposition.  For example, if your mother or other women in your family had stubborn stretch marks that refused to budge then it is unlikely that a cream will work for you.

There are few independent scientific studies into the efficiency of stretch mark creams.  Kang S et al used 0.1% topical tretinoin for early stage stretch marks and noticed some recovery in patients (Kang S et al.  Topical tretinoin (retinoic acid) improves early stretch marks.  Arch Dermatol 1996; 132: 519-526).   Elson ML treated stretch marks at different stages and observed recovery in 15 out of 16 patients (Elson ML.  Treatment of striae distensae with topical tretinoin. J Dermatol Surg Oncol 1990; 16:267-270).

The search for the best stretch mark creams to battle these unsightly scars does not need to be difficult, but before you make your selection consider what’s on offer.

Different Creams

Collagen replacement creams help to restore the lost or broken connective tissue that causes stretch marks to appear.  Creams containing vitamins claim to restore the skin’s elasticity and herbal creams contain natural ingredients.  Seek out well-known brands with a good reputation, and if you are pregnant consult your doctor to make sure the stretch mark cream doesn’t contain any active ingredients that could harm your baby.

Save Cupboard Space

The last thing you want is to have a cupboard full of loads of different tubs, cartons, and containers from different brands.  And though every person is different (as are their responses to any kind of therapeutic intervention), to find the best stretch mark cream for you talk to people you know and find out what works for them.  You could also join an online forum, such as a pregnancy discussion group to see what is being used with the best results by the majority of women.  There isn’t one catch-all cream that works well for everyone but you should pick up a very strong indicator of the best stretch mark cream for you.
